Selling lamps and bulbs online: Lighting Facts, efficiency and the EU label
The Lighting Facts label a lamp listing must show near the price, the 45 lumens per watt minimum, Amazon's and Walmart's rules, and the EU energy label, with every source linked.

On this page
A light bulb listing has a rule that few other products share: the page itself must show a label. US rules ask a website selling covered lamps to show the Lighting Facts label image for each model, close to the price. Bulbs also face an efficiency floor. General service lamps must meet 45 lumens per watt, and Amazon and Walmart apply it too.
This page covers the label, the efficiency standard, the marketplaces' rules, and the EU label.
What this page covers: light bulbs, lamps, fixtures, LED strips and string lights.
The short version
- A website selling covered lamps must show each model's Lighting Facts label image, close to the price.
- General service lamps must meet the 45 lumens per watt minimum.
- Amazon's lighting templates carry Energy Labeling Rule fields, and bulbs that fail the standards are prohibited.
- EU listings for light sources must show the energy class and the label.
Does a light bulb listing need the Lighting Facts label?
Yes, for covered lamps. For each model of a covered lamp, a website must show the Lighting Facts label image clearly and close to the price. On Amazon, lighting templates carry Energy Labeling Rule fields for it. On your Shopify store, place the label image beside the price.
If you sell a bulb in several wattages or colour temperatures, each model needs a label image of its model.
What efficiency must light bulbs meet?
General service lamps must meet a minimum of 45 lumens per watt. Walmart applies the same minimum, and Amazon prohibits bulbs that fail efficiency standards.
If a lamp comes with a bulb, check the bulb's figures before you list the lamp.
What should lighting images show?
Lighting images should show the Lighting Facts label, the light the product gives and its base:
- The Lighting Facts label, readable, as a separate image in the set.
- The bulb or lamp lit, in a room, with its colour temperature shown truthfully.
- The base type and size, close up, so the buyer knows it fits.
What do Amazon and Walmart add for lighting?
Amazon and Walmart each add rules for lighting:
| Where | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Amazon | Energy Labeling Rule fields in lighting templates; bulbs failing efficiency standards prohibited. |
| Walmart | The 45 lumens per watt minimum for general service lamps. |
What must an EU lighting listing show?
Light sources sold online in the EU must show their energy class and the energy label.
How Commicorn helps
- Your label, as printed. On the Untouched product route your photo's pixels are never redrawn, so the markings on the bulb and box stay exactly as printed.
- One thing to add yourself. Upload each model's Lighting Facts label to the marketplace's field, or beside the price on your store. We do not make or edit that label.
Questions sellers ask
What is the Lighting Facts label?
The label a website selling covered lamps must show for each model, as an image, clearly and close to the price.
What is the minimum efficiency for general service lamps?
45 lumens per watt, which Walmart applies too.
Does Amazon allow bulbs that fail efficiency standards?
No. Amazon prohibits bulbs that fail efficiency standards, and its lighting templates carry Energy Labeling Rule fields for the label.
Does each wattage of a bulb need a Lighting Facts label?
Yes. Each model, including each wattage or colour temperature you sell, needs a label image of that model.
What must an EU light bulb listing show?
The light source's energy class and the energy label.
Before you list
Have each model's Lighting Facts label image ready to sit beside the price, the lumens per watt figure for every bulb, including one that comes with a lamp, and for the EU, the energy class and label. On an edge case, 16 CFR 305.27 settles the label for covered lamps, and the 45 lumens per watt minimum in 10 CFR 430.32 settles whether a general service lamp can sell on Amazon and Walmart, both cited above.
