Etsy listing photo size and thumbnail crop: settings that keep your product in frame
The photo size Etsy suggests, why your first photo is cropped differently in search, your shop and the app, how to frame so the item stays in every crop, video on Etsy listings, and how to check the thumbnail at phone size.

On this page
Etsy suggests listing photos of about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, saved as JPEGs under about 1MB, and asks for original photos of the actual item. Etsy crops your first photo differently in search, your shop and the app, so use a square first photo with the item centred and a margin of plain background on every side.
On Etsy, your first photo does more work than any other. It is the photo buyers see in search, in your shop, in the app and in Etsy's emails, and it is cropped differently in several of those places. A photo that looks perfect when you upload it can lose the top of a mug handle or the end of a necklace in a search thumbnail. Getting the size and framing right once saves that loss on every listing.
This guide covers the size Etsy suggests, how the thumbnail is cropped, how to frame so your item survives every crop, the first photo against the rest, video, and how to check the result at phone size.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy's image help, as search results quote it, suggests photos about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, and files kept under about 1MB so uploads finish smoothly. There is no background rule and no rule against words on photos, but Etsy asks for something more basic: original photos of the actual item buyers will receive, not renderings or stock photos.
In practice:
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Shortest side | About 2,000 pixels |
| Shape | Square or landscape for the first photo (see below) |
| File size | Under about 1MB |
| File type | JPEG for photos |
| Content | Original photos of the real item |
A photo from a recent phone is far larger than 2,000 pixels, so you will usually resize rather than enlarge. Resize down to about 2,000 to 3,000 pixels on the shortest side and save as a JPEG at high quality; that usually lands near the 1MB mark.
Why does Etsy crop the thumbnail differently in search, your shop and the app?
Etsy crops your first photo differently because it shows that photo in several places (search results, your shop page, the listing itself, the app and its emails) and does not show the whole photo in every one of them. Sellers and guides report different crops in different places, roughly square in some and landscape in others, taken from the middle of the photo. Etsy's image help gives no single thumbnail shape for every place, so frame your first photo to be cropped in more than one way.
Etsy's cropping has one practical consequence: anything near the edges of your first photo may be cut off somewhere.
How do you keep an item visible in every Etsy crop?
To keep your item visible in every Etsy crop, centre it and leave a margin:
- Centre the item. Crops are taken from the middle, so the middle is the safe area.
- Keep the item inside the central part of the frame. In a square photo, keep it well inside the edges; in a landscape photo, keep it away from the left and right edges, where a square crop would cut.
- Leave a margin of plain background on every side.
- Avoid tall, thin first photos. A portrait photo cropped to a square or landscape shape loses its top and bottom.
A square first photo with the item centred and a comfortable margin is the simplest choice. It survives a square crop untouched and a landscape crop with only background lost.
What should the first Etsy photo show, and what should the rest show?
The first Etsy photo has one job: to make a buyer scrolling search results stop and tap. The rest have a different job: to answer every question before the buyer has to ask.
The first photo:
- The item alone, or in a simple setting, filling the centre of the frame.
- Clear at the size of a search result on a phone, about the width of a thumb.
- The same item the title names. If the title says "set of 4", the first photo shows four.
- No collage of several images. At thumbnail size, a collage shows nothing clearly.
The photos after it:
- Every side and angle.
- Close-ups of the material, finish and details.
- The item at its real size: on a hand, beside a familiar object, in a room.
- Every colour or option, each the same angle and light.
- What comes in the parcel, packaging included if it matters to buyers.
- The item in use.
These later photos are not cropped for search, so they can be any shape, but keeping them square or 4:3 makes the listing page look tidy.
Does Etsy allow mockups and AI images?
Etsy allows mockups only for personalised and print-on-demand items, and asks sellers to disclose AI use. Etsy's House Rules ask for original photos of the actual item, not renderings or stock photos. Etsy allows mockups for personalised items and print-on-demand designs, where the exact item does not exist until it is ordered. For everything else, the photos should be of the real item.
If AI tools helped make any of your images, Etsy's Creativity Standards ask you to say so in the listing description. Our guide to AI product photography covers where the line sits.
How do you resize photos for Etsy?
Resize phone photos for Etsy by cropping first, then bringing the shortest side to about 2,000 to 3,000 pixels and saving as a JPEG. A quick resize keeps uploads fast without losing detail:
- Crop first. Square for the first photo, item centred, margin on every side.
- Resize so the shortest side is about 2,000 to 3,000 pixels.
- Save as JPEG at high quality. If the file is well over 1MB, lower the quality a step and save again.
- Look at it at full size. If edges have gone soft or blocky, the quality is too low; go back a step.
- Keep the original. Resize a copy, never the only file you have.
Most phones' built-in photo editors can crop to a square, and free tools on any computer can resize and save as JPEG.
In what order should Etsy listing photos go?
Etsy buyers swipe through photos in order, so the order is part of the listing. A sequence that works for most items:
- The item, clear, centred: the first photo.
- The item in use or in place, so the buyer sees it in their life.
- Scale, on a hand or beside something familiar.
- Detail, the material and finish up close.
- Options, each colour or size.
- What arrives, the item and any packaging or extras.
- The back or underside, and any label or maker's mark.
Put the photo that answers the most common question in your messages second. If buyers keep asking about size, the scale photo goes straight after the first.
How long should an Etsy listing video be?
An Etsy listing video should be about 5 to 15 seconds long, say photography guides that relay Etsy's listing help, and it plays without sound once uploaded. Etsy's listing form shows the current limits when you upload.
A short video earns its place when movement shows something a photo cannot:
- how a bag opens and what fits inside
- how fabric drapes or a dress moves
- how a ring catches the light
- how a toy or a gadget works
Shoot it in the same light as your photos, hold the phone steady, and keep the item in the centre of the frame, for the same reason as the first photo.
How do you check an Etsy thumbnail at phone size?
After you publish, check the Etsy listing on a phone, the way most buyers will see it:
- Search for your main phrase in the Etsy app and find your listing in the results. Is the whole item visible? Can you tell what it is in a second?
- Open your shop page and look at the same listing there.
- Open the listing and swipe through every photo.
- Compare with the listings around yours. Is yours the clearest? Does it stand out by being clear rather than busy?
If the item is cut off anywhere, re-crop the first photo with a wider margin and upload it again.
What are the most common Etsy first-photo problems?
An item at the edge of the frame, a portrait photo and a busy background are the most common Etsy first-photo problems:
| Problem | What buyers see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Item at the edge of the frame | Part of it missing in search | Centre it, add a margin |
| Portrait photo | Top and bottom cut off in a square crop | Re-crop to square |
| Busy background | The item lost among props | A plain or simple setting |
| Collage of several images | Nothing clear at thumbnail size | One photo of the item |
| Dark or yellow light | The item looks dull or the wrong colour | Daylight, white card, no room lights |
| Item too small in frame | A speck in a thumbnail | Crop closer, keeping the margin |
Each of these is quick to fix and shows up straight away in search, where buyers decide in a glance.
How do you make an Etsy shop's photos look consistent?
True colour and one look for the whole shop make an Etsy shop's photos look professional:
- True colour. Check the photo against the item in daylight. Colour is one of the first things a buyer compares when the parcel arrives.
- One look for the whole shop. The same background, light and framing on every first photo makes your shop page look like a collection rather than a jumble. Buyers browsing your shop see that consistency at once.
Should the first Etsy photo match the title?
Yes. The first Etsy photo and the title are read together. Etsy's April 2026 title guidance asks for titles that say clearly what the item is first. If the title says "Linen napkins, set of 4" and the first photo shows one napkin folded on a plate, the buyer has to work out what they are buying. Show the set.
A first-photo checklist

How Commicorn helps
- Square images, large enough. Commicorn's images are square, at 2,000 pixels or more on each side.
- Real photos for Etsy. Images where AI drew your item stay out of your Etsy folder, because Etsy asks for photos of the real item.
- Your light, fixed. Each photo you add is corrected for light as it arrives, without AI, and you can always go back to the original.
- Every photo after the first. Size, detail, contents and in-use images, from the photos you have.

Questions sellers ask
What is the best size for Etsy listing photos?
About 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, saved as a JPEG under about 1MB, as search results quote Etsy's image help.
What shape should the first Etsy photo be?
Square, or landscape with the item centred. Etsy crops the first photo differently in different places, and a square photo with a margin survives every crop.
Why is my Etsy thumbnail cut off?
Etsy crops the first photo from the middle, roughly square in some places and landscape in others, so anything near the edges may be lost. Re-crop with the item centred and a wider margin, and upload it again.
Can I use mockups on Etsy?
Only for personalised items and print-on-demand designs, where the exact item does not exist until it is ordered. For everything else, Etsy asks for original photos of the real item.
Do Etsy listing videos have sound?
No. Photography guides that relay Etsy's listing help say listing videos play without sound once uploaded, and should be about 5 to 15 seconds long.
