Etsy SEO is matching the words a buyer types to the four places Etsy reads them on your listing: the title of up to 140 characters, up to 13 tags of 20 characters each, the attributes and the category. Etsy's title guidance of April 2026 asks for a short, readable title that says what the item is first, with other details moved to tags, descriptions and attributes. The first photo then decides whether a buyer clicks.

Etsy SEO is less mysterious than it sounds. A buyer types a few words into Etsy's search bar, and Etsy looks for listings whose words, tags, attributes and categories match them. Your job is to make sure the words a buyer would type are in the right places on your listing, written so a person still wants to click. Everything else, from photos to reviews, decides what happens after the match. The good news for small shops is that most of Etsy SEO is careful writing, not budget: the same 140 characters, 13 tags and handful of attributes are open to every seller.

This guide covers how Etsy search reads a listing, how to find the phrases buyers use, Etsy's title guidance from April 2026, tags, attributes, photos and the rules on AI. For the 13 tags in detail, see our guide to Etsy tags.

How does Etsy search read a listing?

Etsy search matches a buyer's words against four parts of a listing:

  1. The title, up to 140 characters.
  2. The tags, up to 13, each up to 20 characters.
  3. The attributes, such as colour, material, occasion and style, chosen from Etsy's lists.
  4. The category you place the listing in.

Etsy's title guidance, dated April 2026, encourages sellers to keep the title focused on what the item is and its most important traits, "while moving other key details to listing tags, descriptions, and attributes". In other words, the title no longer has to carry every phrase. The tags and attributes are where the rest belong.

Etsy's guide to keywords explains the basics of matching buyer searches to listing words, and is worth reading once if you are new to it.

How do you find the phrases Etsy buyers type?

Find the phrases Etsy buyers type by starting with the buyer, not the product. A seller calls something a "hand-thrown stoneware mug". A buyer types "handmade coffee mug". Both are right, and only one is what search sees.

Ways to find the buyer's words:

  • Etsy's search bar. Type the start of your product's name and note the suggestions Etsy offers. They come from what buyers search.
  • Your shop's stats. The search terms that brought buyers to your listings tell you which words already work.
  • Competitors' listings. Look at the titles and tags of listings that appear high for your product. Note the phrases, not the claims.
  • Keyword tools with real figures. Tools that show search volumes help you choose between two phrases that mean the same thing.

Group the phrases you find into three kinds:

  • The main phrase: what the item is, in the words most buyers use.
  • Supporting phrases: materials, styles, colours, uses.
  • Occasions and recipients: gift, wedding, birthday, for her, for dad. Use these only when they are essential to what the item is.

A note on figures. Most keyword tools show search volumes from Google, and some model Etsy's searches from other signals. Neither is a count from Etsy, which Etsy does not publish. Use the figures to compare phrases with each other, the bigger of two similar phrases usually being the better main phrase, rather than as a forecast of visits.

How should you write an Etsy title in 2026?

Write an Etsy title that says what the item is first, in fewer than 15 words. Etsy's April 2026 guidance on titles comes down to a few habits:

  • Say clearly what the item is first, then its most important traits, such as colour, material and size.
  • Keep it short. Etsy suggests considering fewer than 15 words.
  • Move subjective words, such as "perfect" or "beautiful", to the description.
  • Include a holiday, occasion or recipient only when it is essential to what the item is.
  • Do not repeat words.
  • Leave out "on sale" and "free delivery". They belong elsewhere.

Etsy's listing form also has rules on capitals: it refuses a title written all in capitals, and sellers report that it refuses one with more than three words in capitals.

Compare two titles for the same mug:

  • Before: "Handmade Mug, Coffee Mug, Ceramic Mug, Pottery Mug, Gift for Her, Mug Gift, Birthday Gift, Perfect Mug"
  • After: "Handmade stoneware coffee mug, speckled white glaze, 12 oz"

The second reads like a product, carries the main phrase, and leaves "gift for her" and "pottery" for the tags.

How many tags can an Etsy listing have?

Each Etsy listing can have 13 tags of up to 20 characters, and tags are where your supporting phrases go. The habits that make them work:

  • Use all 13.
  • Use phrases, not single words, as buyers search in phrases: "speckled mug" over "speckled".
  • Do not repeat what an attribute already says. If you chose "white" as the colour attribute, a "white mug" tag adds less than another phrase would.
  • Match the buyer's spelling, including the version of a word your buyers use most.

Our guide to Etsy tags works through examples for five product types.

Yes. Etsy attributes are the fields Etsy offers once you choose a category: colour, material, occasion, holiday, style, room and more, depending on the item. Buyers use them to narrow results, and a listing without them cannot appear in a filtered search for them.

Two habits:

  • Choose the most specific category that fits. The attributes Etsy offers depend on it.
  • Fill in every attribute that is true. It takes a minute per listing and costs nothing.

What makes a good first photo on Etsy?

A good first Etsy photo shows the real item, centred, filling the frame and clear at thumbnail size. Etsy search finds your listing; the first photo decides whether a buyer clicks. Etsy asks for original photos of the actual item, not renderings or stock photos, and suggests large images, about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side.

For the first photo:

  • The item fills the frame, clear at the size of a search result on a phone.
  • The item is centred, so it survives the crop to a thumbnail.
  • The background is plain or a simple setting that suits the item.
  • Every photo after it answers a question: size, detail, colour options, what comes in the parcel, the item in use.

When listings get views but few sales, photos that leave questions unanswered are one of the first things guides like eRank's point to.

Does Google show Etsy listings?

Yes. Etsy listings also appear in Google's results, and Etsy's help on shop and listing pages explains which parts Google reads. Write the first sentence or two of your description as a plain summary of the item, with the main phrase in it. It helps buyers who arrive from Google, and it reads well on Etsy.

Does Etsy require you to disclose AI use?

Yes. Etsy's Creativity Standards ask sellers to disclose the use of AI in the listing description. Etsy also asks for original photos of the real item rather than renderings. If AI tools helped make any of your images, say so in a sentence in the description, and keep the photos of the item itself real. Our guide to AI product photography covers where the line sits.

How often should you revisit Etsy listings for SEO?

Revisit an Etsy listing at three moments, because Etsy SEO is not a one-off job:

  • When a listing's views drop for a few weeks without a seasonal reason. Search what a buyer would search and see where your listing appears.
  • When the seasons turn. Occasion and holiday phrases come and go; swap them in and out of your tags.
  • When you add new items. Your best new phrases may suit older listings too.

Change one thing at a time, such as the title or a few tags, and give it a couple of weeks before judging the result. Changing everything at once leaves you guessing which change helped.

Three items, start to finish

How the same approach plays out for three quite different items:

A brass candle holder. Main phrase: "brass candle holder". Title: "Brass candle holder, set of 2, vintage style taper candlestick". Tags take the other ways buyers search: "taper candle holder", "brass candlestick", "mantel decor", "dinner table decor", "housewarming gift". Attributes: material brass, colour gold, room dining room.

A linen napkin set. Main phrase: "linen napkins". Title: "Linen napkins, set of 4, stonewashed, 18 x 18 in". Tags: "cloth napkins", "dinner napkins", "stonewashed linen", "table linens", "rustic table decor", each colour you sell if buyers search by colour. Attributes: material linen, the colour you chose, occasion only if the set is made for one.

A printable wall art download. Main phrase: "printable wall art". Title: "Botanical printable wall art, set of 3, instant download". Tags: "botanical prints", "digital download art", "plant wall art", "gallery wall set", "kitchen wall art". Attributes: the subject, the room, the orientation.

In each case the title says what the item is, the tags carry the other phrases, and the attributes carry what Etsy can filter.

What are the most common Etsy SEO mistakes?

The most common Etsy SEO mistakes are a title written as a list of keywords, single-word tags and empty attributes, with four more close behind:

  • A title that is a list of keywords. Etsy's guidance now asks for a readable title, with details moved to tags and attributes.
  • Single-word tags. "Mug" competes with every mug on Etsy. "Speckled coffee mug" describes yours.
  • Fewer than 13 tags. Every empty slot is a search your listing cannot match.
  • Empty attributes. A buyer who filters by colour or material never sees a listing without them.
  • Seasonal words left on all year. Take "Christmas gift" off when the season ends, and put it back when it returns.
  • A first photo that does not match the title. If the title says "set of 4" and the photo shows one, buyers scroll past.
  • Copying a competitor's claims. Their phrases tell you how buyers search. Their claims are theirs to prove.

An Etsy SEO checklist

  1. Main phrase found from buyers' searches, not from your name for the item.
  2. Title says what the item is first, under 15 words, no repeats, no "on sale".
  3. 13 tags, phrases of up to 20 characters, nothing that repeats an attribute.
  4. Category as specific as it gets.
  5. Every true attribute filled in.
  6. First photo clear at thumbnail size, the real item.
  7. Description opens with a plain summary containing the main phrase.
  8. AI use disclosed in the description, where it applies.
