Etsy listing title: Etsy's current guidance, the 140-character limit and how titles work with tags
How to write an Etsy listing title the way Etsy has asked for it since August 2025: what the item is first, fewer than 15 words, what to move to tags, attributes and the description, the 140-character limit, Etsy's title suggestion tool, and before-and-after examples.

On this page
An Etsy listing title can be up to 140 characters, but since August 2025 Etsy has asked for something much shorter: a title that says clearly what the item is at the start, with its most important objective traits such as colour, material and size up front, in fewer than 15 words. Subjective words, sale and shipping phrases and repeated words come out, and the other phrases you used to cram into the title move to your 13 tags, your attributes and your description.
For years the standard Etsy advice was to fill all 140 characters with every phrase a buyer might type, separated by commas. That produced titles like "Mug, Coffee Mug, Ceramic Mug, Gift for Her", which read badly and told the buyer little. Etsy has now said in writing that this is no longer what it wants.
This guide covers what changed, the limits, what stays in the title and what moves, how the title and tags divide the work, Etsy's title suggestion tool, and worked examples.
What changed in Etsy's title guidance?
In August 2025 Etsy published new guidance for listing titles in its Seller Handbook: its search looks at the whole listing, including tags, attributes, the description, the first photo and reviews, so the title "doesn't need to do all the work". Etsy asks sellers to keep the title focused on what the item is and its most important traits, "while moving other key details to listing tags, descriptions, and attributes".
The change matters because the old habit was a keyword list. Etsy's guidance sorts title words into what stays and what goes:
| Keep in the title | Move or remove |
|---|---|
| Nouns: what the item is | Subjective words such as "beautiful" or "perfect": out of the title |
| Objective traits: colour, material, size | How it is sold: "on sale", "free shipping": remove |
| An occasion, holiday or recipient only when essential to the item | Repeated words: remove |
| Gifting phrases such as "gift for him", "birthday present": out of the title |
Where the removed words go, Etsy gives two answers: its title guidance table sends subjective words to tags or attributes, and its anatomy-of-a-listing article sends them to the description. Put a word where it does a job: a style a buyer searches for ("boho", "minimalist") makes a good tag, and praise belongs in the description, where the buyer reads it as a reason to buy.
The same release introduced an optional tool that suggests revised titles, covered below.
How many characters can an Etsy title have?
An Etsy title can have up to 140 characters, as Etsy's help on creating a listing states. The 140 is a ceiling, not a target. Etsy's guidance suggests fewer than 15 words, which leaves most titles well short of the limit; the rewritten examples on this page run from 53 to 66 characters.
Two more limits shape the title:
- The first 50 to 60 characters. Etsy's help on SEO notes that search engines such as Google show only the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title, so the most important traits belong at the front.
- Capitals. Etsy does not accept a title written all in capitals (listing tools report the error "Title can not be all capital letters"), and a title should not have more than three words in all capitals. Write in normal sentence or title case.
What should go first in an Etsy title?
What the item is goes first, in the words a buyer types: "stoneware coffee mug", "sterling silver hoop earrings", "linen napkins". Etsy's help on SEO asks sellers to describe the item clearly at the beginning of the title, and its title guidance puts the most important traits up front.
Build it in this order:
- The item, as buyers name it.
- The material, where buyers care: sterling silver, linen, walnut, soy wax.
- The defining traits: colour, size, set count, finish.
- Personalisation, if the item is made to order: "engraved initials", "custom name".
- An occasion or recipient, only when the item exists for it: a wedding guest book, a baby's first Christmas ornament.
Stop when the buyer knows exactly what they would receive. Etsy's Seller Handbook article on the anatomy of a well-crafted listing covers the title alongside the photos and description, and points sellers to the same title suggestion tool described below.
How do Etsy titles and tags work together?
The title tells the buyer what the item is; the 13 tags catch the other ways buyers search for it. Each Etsy listing has up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, and Etsy search reads them alongside the title, attributes, description, first photo and reviews. Since Etsy's August 2025 title guidance, tags carry more of the load, because Etsy has moved the extra phrases out of the title and into them.
Divide the work this way:
| Where | What goes there |
|---|---|
| Title | Your main phrase and the item's defining traits, readable as a sentence |
| Tags (13) | Other names for the item, styles, uses, occasions, recipients |
| Attributes | Colour, material, occasion and the other fields Etsy offers for the category |
| Description | Subjective language, story, care, sizing detail |
Titles and tags can share words. Your main phrase can sit in both. What tags should not do is repeat what an attribute already says: Etsy explains that attributes work like tags and that you do not need a tag that exactly matches an attribute you have added, so a "white" tag on a mug whose colour attribute is white spends a slot that another phrase could fill. Our guide to Etsy tags works through 13-tag sets for five products.
How does Etsy's title suggestion tool work?
Etsy's title tool is optional, uses AI to suggest a revised title from your current title, first photo and description, and appears on your search visibility page when it has a suggestion. You choose Update titles, then review, edit, approve or dismiss each suggestion, for one listing or many.
Three things Etsy states about it:
- English-language shops only. It is available only to shops with their language set to English.
- No suggestion, no tool. If your titles already meet the guidance, the tool does not appear.
- Not a verdict. A suggestion does not mean the current title is underperforming.
Etsy advises downloading a CSV of your listings before changing titles, so you keep your original keywords. Do that, then read every suggestion before you approve it. The tool works from your words and your photo; it does not know your buyers' spelling, so a UK shop should check that "personalised" has not become "personalized".
Etsy title examples: before and after
A keyword-list title and Etsy's current shape for the same mug:
- Before (20 words): Handmade Mug, Coffee Mug, Ceramic Mug, Pottery Mug, Gift for Her, Mug Gift, Birthday Gift, Perfect Mug Christmas, Free Shipping
- After (9 words, 58 characters): Handmade stoneware coffee mug, speckled white glaze, 12 oz
The "after" keeps the noun and the objective traits. "Perfect" and "free shipping" come out of the title, as Etsy's guidance asks. "Gift for her", "pottery mug" and "birthday gift" become tags, where buyers who search those phrases still find the mug.
Five more titles in Etsy's current shape:
| Item | Title | Words | Characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | Sterling silver hoop earrings, small 15mm, hammered finish | 8 | 58 |
| Personalised gift | Personalised leather wallet, engraved initials, brown, slim bifold | 8 | 66 |
| Home textiles | Linen napkins, set of 4, stonewashed, sage green, 18 x 18 in | 12 | 60 |
| Digital download | Botanical printable wall art, set of 3, instant download | 9 | 56 |
| Candle | Soy candle in amber glass jar, cedar and orange, 8 oz | 11 | 53 |
Each says what the item is in its first three or four words, carries the facts a buyer checks (size, set count, finish, scent), and names the item well inside the first 50 to 60 characters, the part a search engine shows. "Instant download" stays on the wall art because it is how the item is delivered, a fact about the item, not a shipping offer.
An Etsy title checklist
- What the item is, in the first few words.
- Colour, material and size where buyers care.
- Fewer than 15 words, within 140 characters.
- No subjective words, no "on sale", no "free shipping".
- No word repeated.
- Occasion or recipient only when essential to the item.
- Not in all capitals, and no more than three words in capitals.
- The phrases you removed, moved into tags and attributes.

Questions sellers ask
How long should an Etsy title be in 2026?
Fewer than 15 words, as Etsy's guidance suggests, inside the 140-character limit. Put what the item is in the first few words, and keep the important traits inside the first 50 to 60 characters, the part search engines show.
Should I still use all 140 characters on Etsy?
No. Etsy's title guidance asks for a short, readable title focused on what the item is and its key traits, with other details moved to tags, descriptions and attributes. Filling 140 characters with keyword variations is the habit the guidance was written to end.
Where do keywords go if not in the Etsy title?
Into your 13 tags, your attributes and your description. Etsy says its search looks at the whole listing, including tags, attributes, the description, the first photo and reviews. Tags hold up to 20 characters each, so write them as two- and three-word phrases.
Do I have to use Etsy's suggested titles?
No. The tool is optional, and Etsy says a suggestion does not mean your current title is underperforming. Download a CSV of your listings first, as Etsy advises, and edit any suggestion that changes your buyers' spelling or drops a fact they search for.
Can I put "gift for her" in my Etsy title?
Only if the item is made for that recipient. Etsy's guidance asks sellers to include a holiday, occasion or recipient only when it is essential to what the item is, and lists gifting phrases such as "gift for him" among the words to keep out of the title. Put "gift for her" in your tags instead.
The last word
An Etsy title now has one job: tell a buyer exactly what the item is in a sentence they want to read. Lead with the noun, add the facts that set your item apart, and move every other phrase to the tags and attributes Etsy's search reads alongside it. Rewritten this way, the title reads like a product rather than a keyword list, and the phrases you moved still reach Etsy's search through your tags and attributes.
