How to sell on Walmart Marketplace in 2026: approval, listings and the rules that unpublish items
How to sell on Walmart Marketplace in 2026: applying and the documents Walmart asks for, setting up items to Walmart's content rules, the listing quality score, restricted categories and vetting, images without claims, and the conflicts that unpublish items.

On this page
To sell on Walmart Marketplace, a seller applies with a registered business, its tax ID and documents, and waits for Walmart's review; an approved seller then creates the seller account, accepts the retailer agreement, confirms tax information and sets up payment. Each item needs a product identifier such as a UPC, a title of no more than 150 characters, three to ten key features of up to 80 characters each, a one-paragraph description of at least 150 words, and a pure white, square main image, under Walmart's product detail page rules updated on 6 October 2026. Walmart scores every item out of 100 and unpublishes items whose claims, images, packaging and attributes disagree.
How do you become a Walmart seller?
Selling on Walmart Marketplace starts with an application, not an instant sign-up. Guides that walk sellers through it describe the order: apply, wait for Walmart's review, and, if approved, receive an invitation to create the seller account, where the seller accepts the retailer agreement, registers the company, confirms tax information and sets up how Walmart pays. Walmart keeps its onboarding pages behind a seller login; the steps above are the order sellers' guides set out.
Walmart's tax guidance names the core documents for US sellers: a business tax ID or business licence number, and documents that confirm the company's details. US sellers with an employer identification number are classified for tax purposes under a W-9, and Walmart may ask for further documents to confirm the number.
What makes a Walmart Marketplace application stronger?
Sellers' guides describe four things that make a Walmart Marketplace application stronger:
- A registered business, with its tax ID and documents in order.
- A track record of selling online, on another marketplace or a store.
- Products with GTINs, such as UPCs, for the items planned for Walmart.
- The ability to ship reliably, with tracking.
A complete application is quicker to review, and the same documents are the ones Walmart can ask for later. A seller does not have to sell on Amazon first, but a track record of selling online somewhere is part of a strong application.
What are Walmart's listing rules for titles, key features and descriptions?
Walmart's product detail page rules set the shape of each part of a listing.
| Part | Walmart's rule |
|---|---|
| Title | "Brief titles not exceeding 150 characters"; no repetitive keywords, multiple brands or multiple product types; proper capitalisation, no all caps; no special characters such as ~ ! * $; no promotional claims, URLs, "coming soon" or "out-of-stock"; no Walmart or other retailer names unless licensed or part of the brand; English only unless another language is part of the item or brand name |
| Key features | Three to ten of the most important benefits and features; no more than 80 characters each, spaces included; no HTML, numbered lists or special characters as bullets |
| Description | One paragraph of at least 150 words, depending on category; no bullet points, numbered lists, emojis or special characters |
Walmart's keyword advice is to "Select one or two primary keywords to use once in your product title, description and key features." The guide to Walmart listing optimisation works through each part with examples.
What does a Walmart listing written to the rules look like?
A made-up item, a set of two stainless steel water bottles, written to Walmart's rules:
Title: Brand Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle, 32 oz, Leak-Proof Lid, 2 Pack
Key features: Double-wall insulated stainless steel body Leak-proof screw lid with a carry loop 18/8 stainless steel body, BPA-free lid Fits most car cup holders Two bottles in each pack
The example title is well under 150 characters, with no words in capitals throughout, no symbols and no promotions. Each key feature is one fact within 80 characters, with no symbol at the start. The description would be one paragraph of at least 150 words covering use, materials, size, care and what is in the pack. Every fact in a Walmart listing must be true of the product before it goes live.
How do items get onto Walmart Marketplace?
Walmart sellers add items in three common ways:
- One at a time in Seller Center, which suits a small catalogue and teaches Walmart's fields.
- In bulk with Walmart's item spreadsheets, which suits larger catalogues.
- Through a listing tool or integration that connects a catalogue to Walmart.
Whichever route a seller uses, Walmart's rules apply to every item, and each item needs its product identifier, such as a UPC.
What is the Walmart listing quality score?
The Walmart listing quality score rates every item out of 100 on four parts: content and discoverability, the offer, ratings and reviews, and post-purchase quality. Walmart's listing quality dashboard shows, item by item, where each item falls short.
| Part of the score | What the seller controls |
|---|---|
| Content and discoverability | Title, key features, description, images and attributes |
| Offer | Price, shipping and stock |
| Ratings and reviews | Accurate sizes, true colours and a clear list of what is in the box set the right expectations |
| Post-purchase quality | Shipping on time, answering customer messages quickly |
Content and discoverability is the part a seller controls most directly. Start with the items that sell or should sell, and fix them in batches.
Which categories are restricted on Walmart?
Many categories on Walmart Marketplace are restricted to vetted sellers, each with requirements set by its category policy:
| Category | Walmart's requirements |
|---|---|
| Dietary supplements (updated 11 December 2025) | Restricted to vetted sellers; labels, information and images in English and in agreement with each other; structure/function claims with the FDA statement; disease claims, HCG, hemp, CBD and products needing refrigeration barred |
| Medical devices (updated 11 December 2025) | Restricted; described only for their cleared use; "FDA approved" or "FDA cleared" only when true; no FDA logos; contact lenses and used devices prohibited |
| Children's products (updated 11 December 2025) | A valid Children's Product Certificate and a third-party test report from a CPSC-accepted laboratory, provided when Walmart asks, or the item is unpublished |
Walmart's prohibited products policy lists what Walmart does not allow at all. The rules for each kind of product are in the library's Marketplace updates, such as the supplement rules.
What are Walmart's image requirements?
Walmart's image guidelines, as search results quote them, ask for a main image on pure white (255, 255, 255), square, with at least four images; 2,200 pixels a side recommended and 1,500 for zoom; 5 MB or less; JPEG, PNG or BMP.
Walmart also asks that images "shouldn't include any claims or promotional language about the item". Walmart listing images can show the product, its use, its size and its features, but not promises, discounts or comparisons with other brands. A set of images made for another marketplace, with "best seller" badges or claims on them, needs editing before it goes to Walmart.
Why does Walmart unpublish items?
Walmart unpublishes items whose details disagree or break its policies:
- A "Made in USA" claim is barred when the images, packaging and attributes conflict.
- Supplements: the label, product information and images must agree.
- AI-written content: Walmart's AI content guidelines of 3 April 2026 say "All claims, images, and descriptions must match the actual product including size, color and other features", and bar AI content that misrepresents a product.
- Barred words: "PFAS-free" wording, rayon called "bamboo", false FDA claims and FDA logos are barred, and "biodegradable" and "compostable" are restricted.
- Missing documents for a restricted category, such as a children's product without its certificate.
When Walmart unpublishes an item, check the reason Walmart gives first. One set of facts behind every field, image and marketplace avoids most conflicts, as the guide to listing on several marketplaces explains.
Can Amazon listings be copied to Walmart?
An Amazon listing is a starting point for facts but usually breaks Walmart's rules as written. Walmart's titles, key features, description format and image rules differ from Amazon's, and Walmart bars things Amazon allows, such as words in all capitals in titles. A Walmart description is one paragraph with no bullet points, where an Amazon description often carries lists.
Walmart allows AI-written listing content with conditions: the seller is responsible for reviewing and backing up AI content before it goes live, and AI content that misrepresents a product is prohibited.
How should Walmart variants be set up?
Walmart groups sizes and colours of one item as variants, and each variant is still an item with a title, images, attributes and a quality score. Give each Walmart variant a main image that shows its colour or size, and put the variant in both the title and the attribute, so buyers who filter by it find the right one.
What should a new Walmart seller do in the first weeks?
A steady start on Walmart Marketplace lists a few items well before listing the whole catalogue:
- List the best five products first, written and shown to Walmart's rules.
- Watch their quality scores on the dashboard, and fix what the dashboard shows before adding more.
- Add the next batch with the same fixes built in.
- Check for unpublished items daily in the first weeks, and read the reason Walmart gives.
- Answer customer messages quickly, as the post-purchase part of the score depends on what happens after the sale.
- Compare price and shipping with similar items on Walmart, set shipping the business can keep, and update stock daily, since the offer is one of the score's four parts.
