Product image sizes for Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, eBay, Shopify and six more marketplaces
Product image sizes, file rules, backgrounds and words on images for Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, Wayfair, Target Plus, Kohl's, AliExpress and Shein in one table, with each marketplace's page linked and a single size that works almost everywhere.

On this page
Product image sizes differ by marketplace: Amazon wants over 1,000 pixels on the longest side for zoom, Walmart a square of 2,200 pixels, Etsy about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, eBay at least 500 pixels with about 1,600 recommended, and Shopify up to 5,000 pixels. A square image of 2,000 to 2,500 pixels, saved as a high-quality JPEG, meets the size rules of nearly every marketplace; resize for Shein, and save smaller files for Etsy.
Every marketplace publishes image rules, and no two say quite the same thing. Amazon counts pixels on the longest side; Walmart wants squares; Etsy talks about the shortest side; eBay bans words on every photo. Selling on several of them means keeping a dozen sets of numbers in your head, or one table.
This is that table, followed by why the numbers differ, the detail for each marketplace, and a single size that works almost everywhere, so you can make one set of images and export it to every marketplace with only small changes. Every figure links to the page it came from, and the source list at the foot of the page says how each one was read. A figure that comes from an integrator rather than the marketplace itself is marked "as relayed" in the table.
What image size does each marketplace require?
Each marketplace's image size, file types, main image rule and rule on words, as of October 2026:
| Marketplace | Size | File | Main image | Words on images |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 500 to 10,000 px on the longest side; over 1,000 for zoom | JPEG preferred; TIFF, PNG, non-animated GIF | Pure white, product fills 85% or more | Not on the main image; allowed on others |
| Walmart | Square; 2,200 px recommended, 1,500 for zoom; 5MB or less | JPEG, PNG, BMP | Pure white (255, 255, 255), square | No claims or promotional language |
| Etsy | About 2,000 px on the shortest side; files under about 1MB | JPEG, PNG, GIF | No rule; original photos of the real item | No rule |
| eBay | At least 500 px on the longest side; about 1,600 recommended; up to 24 photos | Most common types, 12MB each | White or light preferred | Not allowed on any photo |
| Shopify | Up to 5,000 x 5,000 px, under 20MB; a 2,048 px square usually displays best | PNG, JPEG, WebP and others | Your choice | Your choice |
| Wayfair | 1,000 px a side to be featured; 2,000 to show detail | Not stated | Silhouette and room shots both recommended | Not stated |
| Kohl's | Square, at least 2,000 px a side | JPEG or TIFF | White, no added graphics | Lifestyle and detail allowed after the main |
| Target Plus | Square, 1,200 to 6,000 px; 2,400 preferred, as relayed | JPEG preferred; TIFF, PSD, PNG | White, as relayed | Not on any image, as relayed |
| AliExpress | At least 800 px a side, as relayed | JPEG, PNG | White preferred | Not confirmed |
| Shein | 1,340 x 1,785, or square 900 to 2,200 px; 3MB or less | JPG, JPEG, PNG | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
Why do marketplace image sizes differ?
Marketplace image sizes differ because the marketplaces measure different things for different reasons:
- Longest side or shortest side. Amazon and eBay count the longest side, so a long, thin photo can pass. Etsy counts the shortest side, so the same photo might not.
- Minimum or recommendation. Amazon's 500 and eBay's 500 are floors; their 1,000 and 1,600 are what they prefer. Aim for the preference, not the floor.
- Zoom thresholds. Amazon and Walmart switch on zoom only above a size, 1,000 and 1,500 pixels. Below it, shoppers cannot look closer.
- Square or not. Walmart, Kohl's and Target Plus, as relayed, want squares; the others accept any shape but display some crops.
Why does zoom matter for product images?
Zoom is how shoppers inspect a product before they buy: the stitching, the finish, the small print on a label. An image below the zoom threshold cannot be inspected at all, and a shopper who cannot inspect may not buy, or may buy and be surprised. That is why the zoom figures, not the minimums, are the ones to plan for.
What one image size works on almost every marketplace?
A square image of 2,000 to 2,500 pixels a side, saved as a high-quality JPEG, meets the size rules of nearly every marketplace above:
- Over Amazon's 1,000-pixel zoom threshold, and well inside its 10,000 maximum.
- Square for Walmart, near its 2,200 recommendation and over its 1,500 zoom size.
- About Etsy's suggested 2,000 on the shortest side.
- Over eBay's 500 minimum and its 1,600 recommendation.
- Inside Shopify's 5,000-pixel limit, near the 2,048 square that usually displays best.
- At Wayfair's 2,000 to show detail, and Kohl's 2,000 minimum.
Making every image at that size also saves time later: if you add a marketplace, the images you have are already big enough, and a resize down is quick where a resize up would lose detail.
Two exceptions: Shein's main and detail images are 1,340 by 1,785 or a square no larger than 2,200, and 3MB or less, so resize for Shein; and Etsy suggests files under about 1MB, so save Etsy copies at a slightly lower quality.
What are Amazon's image rules?
Amazon's main image is the product alone on a pure white background, filling 85% or more of the frame, with no added text, graphics or watermarks, no illustration and no props that are not included. Images run from 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side, with zoom from 1,000; JPEG is preferred. Amazon recommends at least six images and one video. Words are allowed on the images after the main image. Our guide to Amazon's image requirements covers the detail.
What are Walmart's image rules?
Walmart's image guidelines, as search results quote them, ask for a pure white (255, 255, 255) square main image, with at least four images; 2,200 pixels a side recommended and 1,500 the minimum for zoom; 5MB or less; JPEG, PNG or BMP. Its rule for words: images "shouldn't include any claims or promotional language about the item".
What are Etsy's image rules?
Etsy sets no background rule, but asks for original photos of the actual item buyers receive, not renderings or stock photos. It suggests about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side and files under about 1MB. The first photo is cropped differently in different places, so keep the item centred. Our guide to Etsy listing photo size explains the crop.
What are eBay's image rules?
eBay's “Picture policy” asks for photos at least 500 pixels on the longest side and bans added borders, text, artwork, marketing material and watermarks on any photo. Its help suggests about 1,600 pixels, files up to 12MB, and up to 24 photos per listing. So the infographics and labelled images you use elsewhere do not belong on eBay; plain photos do.
What image sizes does Shopify accept?
Shopify accepts images up to 5,000 by 5,000 pixels and under 20MB, in most common formats, and a 2,048-pixel square usually displays best. Your theme decides how they are cropped, so choose one shape, square is simplest, and use it for every product. If your store feeds Google Shopping, keep the main image free of promotional overlays, as Google's image rules ask.
What are Wayfair's image rules?
Wayfair's supplier guide says images need to be at least 1,000 by 1,000 pixels to be featured, and that 2,000 by 2,000 "will highlight every detail". It recommends a mix of silhouette shots and room shots, and sets no white main image rule.
What are Kohl's image rules?
Kohl's vendor style guides ask for every image to be square, at least 2,000 pixels a side, in JPEG or TIFF, with the main view on white and no added graphics. Lifestyle and detail shots are welcome after it.
What are Target Plus's image rules?
Target Plus does not publish its seller rules openly, but integrators who connect sellers to it relay square images from 1,200 to 6,000 pixels a side, 2,400 preferred, JPEG preferred, with a white main image and no added words on any image. The common size of 2,000 to 2,500 pixels square sits inside that range.
What are AliExpress's and Shein's image rules?
AliExpress's image rules are relayed by listing guides: at least 800 pixels a side, with only the first six images shown. Shein's open platform documents allow one main image and up to ten detail images, each 1,340 by 1,785 or square from 900 to 2,200 pixels, in JPG or PNG, 3MB or less.
What are Google Shopping's image rules?
Google Merchant Center's image rules apply to your feed if you advertise through it: no promotional overlays or text covering the product on the main image, and the product clearly shown. A clean main image on white usually meets them.
Which file type is best for product images?
JPEG suits photos on every marketplace, and PNG suits images with words:
- JPEG is the safe choice for photos everywhere. Amazon prefers it, and every marketplace in the table accepts it.
- PNG keeps sharp edges and flat colours, which suits images with words and charts, but makes larger files for photos. Walmart, Etsy, Shopify and Shein accept it.
- TIFF and PSD are print and design formats. Some marketplaces accept them, but a JPEG made from them is smaller and works everywhere.
- GIF is for simple graphics. Amazon accepts it only when it is not animated.
Should product images be RGB or CMYK?
RGB, in the sRGB colour space. Amazon's staff list the accepted colour modes as RGB or CMYK. For anything shown on screens, RGB is the safer choice: CMYK is a printing format, and colours can shift when a screen displays it. Save your marketplace images in RGB, in the standard sRGB colour space, and check them on a phone before you upload.
How do you check a product image before upload?
Check six things before you upload a product image:
- Size: open the file's details and check the pixel dimensions.
- Shape: square where the marketplace wants it.
- File size: under the marketplace's limit, and under about 1MB for Etsy.
- Background: pure white for the main image where it is required.
- Words: none where they are not allowed.
- Sharpness: zoom to 100% and look at the edges and any label.
How do you manage one set of images for every marketplace?
Make one set at the common size, then export a copy for each marketplace:
- Shoot and make every image at 2,000 to 2,500 pixels square.
- Keep a word-free version of every image that carries words, for eBay, Target Plus and Google.
- Export a copy per marketplace: smaller files for Etsy, Shein's sizes for Shein.
- Name files by product, image and marketplace, so the right set goes to the right place.
- Check the marketplace's upload screen when you start on a new one, and once a year after that: marketplaces revise their image specs, and this table is dated October 2026.
