The best Shopify product image size is a 2,048 by 2,048 pixel square, which Shopify notes usually displays best; Shopify accepts product images up to 5,000 by 5,000 pixels and files under 20MB. Use one shape for every product, save photos as high-quality JPEGs, add alt text to each image, and keep a clean main image with no words if your store feeds Google Shopping.

On a marketplace, the rules decide how your images look. On your Shopify store, you decide, and that freedom is where most stores go wrong. One product is square, the next is tall, the third is a wide lifestyle shot, and the collection page looks like a jumble. Shopify is generous with what it accepts. Consistency is up to you.

This guide covers the one decision that fixes most problems, the pixel size Shopify suggests, file size and page speed, alt text, the gallery, and keeping a main image that passes Google Shopping. It ends with a way to fix an existing store a batch at a time, best sellers first, without stopping sales while you work.

What shape should Shopify product images be?

Every Shopify product image should be the same shape, because your theme decides how product images are cropped on collection pages and in the product gallery. Most themes either crop every image to the same shape or show each at its original shape, which leaves uneven gaps. Either way, the fix is the same: choose one shape and use it for every product's images.

ShapeSuitsWatch out for
Square (1:1)Almost every product; matches marketplace imagesTall products get a lot of side space
Portrait (4:5 or 3:4)Clothing on a model, bottles, tall productsWide products look small
Landscape (4:3 or 3:2)Furniture, rugs, wide productsTall products look small; less room on phones

Square is the simplest choice for most stores, and it has a second advantage: the same images work on Amazon, Walmart and the other marketplaces that ask for squares. One set of photos, cropped once, then serves your store and every marketplace you sell on, which saves a second round of editing for each new channel. If you sell clothing on models, portrait is the better choice, as long as every product uses it.

Check your theme's settings: many let you set the image shape for collection pages, so even mixed images display evenly.

What size should Shopify product images be?

Shopify accepts product images up to 5,000 by 5,000 pixels and 25 megapixels, and files under 20MB, in most common formats, including JPEG, PNG and WebP. It notes that a square of 2,048 by 2,048 pixels usually displays best. If you import products with a CSV file, Shopify's import refuses images over 20 megapixels.

In practice:

  • 2,048 by 2,048 pixels for square images.
  • 2,048 pixels on the long side for portrait or landscape, with the short side to match your chosen shape.
  • Never smaller than about 1,000 pixels, or zoom and large screens show soft edges.

High-resolution screens on phones and laptops show more pixels than their size suggests, so an image that looks sharp on an old monitor can look soft on a new phone. 2,048 pixels gives room for both.

How big should Shopify image files be?

Shopify image files should be as small as they can be without visible loss, because large files slow pages down, and a slow product page loses shoppers before the images appear:

  • Save photos as JPEG at high quality, not maximum. The difference is invisible and the file is much smaller.
  • Use PNG only where you need sharp flat graphics, such as a size chart or a logo.
  • Do not upload 5,000-pixel originals when 2,048 will do.
  • Check a product page on a phone on mobile data, not only on office wifi. If the main image takes more than a moment to appear, the files are too large.

What background should Shopify product images have?

On your Shopify store the background is a brand choice, and the rule is the same as for shape: one background for every product's main image. On a marketplace, by contrast, the main image is usually white because the marketplace says so.

  • White matches marketplace images, works with any theme and suits the Google Shopping feed.
  • A light grey or a soft brand colour can make a store look distinctive, as long as every product uses the same one and the product stands out from it.
  • A different background per product makes a collection page look unplanned.

If you choose a colour for the store, keep a white version of each main image for the marketplaces and the feed.

How should you use lifestyle images on a Shopify store?

Your Shopify store is where lifestyle images can do the most, because no marketplace rules apply to them. Use them after the main image, in the same shape, and keep them true to the product: the same colour, the same size, the same parts. A shopper who receives something different from the image will notice, and on your store there is no marketplace standing between you and the complaint.

How do you write alt text for Shopify product images?

Write Shopify alt text as one sentence describing what is in the image, different for each image. Alt text is the description of an image that screen readers read aloud and search engines read too. Shopify lets you add it to each product image.

Good alt text:

  • Describes what is in the image, in a sentence: "Navy merino crew-neck jumper laid flat, front view".
  • Names the product the way a shopper would, which also helps search. Shopify's SEO help covers where keywords belong on a store.
  • Differs for each image: front view, back view, detail of the cuff, worn on a model.
  • Avoids stuffing keyword lists into every image.

In what order should Shopify product images go?

On your Shopify store you control the order of images, so put a clear main image first:

  1. A clear main image of the product, the same style for every product.
  2. The product in use or worn.
  3. Details: material, finish, the feature that matters most.
  4. Size: in a hand or with dimensions.
  5. Variants: each colour, assigned to its variant so the gallery switches when a shopper picks it.
  6. Size chart, where it applies.

Assigning images to variants means a shopper who chooses "navy" sees navy. It is one of the most useful things a Shopify product page can do, and it only works if every variant has an image.

Do Shopify product images zoom?

Yes, in most themes. Most Shopify themes let shoppers enlarge a product image, either by zooming on hover or by opening it full screen. Both show the image at its full size, which is where a 2,048-pixel image pays off and a small one disappoints. Open a product on your store, enlarge each image, and check that the details a shopper cares about, such as stitching, texture or a label, are sharp.

How should you name Shopify image files?

Name Shopify image files before you upload them. "navy-merino-jumper-front.jpg" tells you, your team and any tool reading the file what it is; "IMG_4471.jpg" does not. Use the product name, the variant and the view, in lowercase with hyphens. It takes a minute per product and saves hours when you update a catalogue later.

Can Shopify product media include video and 3D?

Yes. Shopify's product media covers more than images: it also takes video and 3D models. A short video showing the product in use, or a 3D model a shopper can turn, can sit in the gallery beside your images. Keep video in the same shape as your images if your theme displays them together, and keep the first frame a clear view of the product.

What are the most common Shopify image mistakes?

Mixed shapes, huge originals and missing alt text are the most common Shopify image mistakes:

MistakeWhat shoppers seeFix
Mixed shapesAn uneven collection pageOne shape for every product
Huge originals uploadedSlow pages on phonesResize to 2,048 pixels
Tiny imagesSoft images, no useful zoomAt least about 1,000 pixels
No alt textNothing for screen readers or searchA sentence describing each image
Variants with no imageThe wrong colour shown when chosenAn image for each variant

How do you keep Shopify images that pass Google Shopping?

Keep the main image clean, because if your Shopify store sends products to Google Merchant Center for Google Shopping, Google's image rules apply to the feed. Google does not allow promotional overlays or text covering the product on the main image, and wants the product clearly shown. It can also remove promotional text, watermarks and logos from images automatically, and disapproves images where overlays cover the product.

That creates a common conflict: a store's main image with a "best seller" badge or a price sticker looks fine on the store and fails in the feed. The answer is to keep a clean main image:

  • Main image: the product on a plain background, no words, badges or borders. It works on the store, in the feed and on every marketplace.
  • Designed images after it: features, lifestyle, size charts. They can carry words on your store.

Our guide to Google Shopping image rules covers the feed in detail.

How do you fix images on an existing Shopify store?

Fix an existing Shopify store's images in order of what shoppers see most, best sellers first:

  1. Best sellers first. Re-shoot or re-crop their main images to your chosen shape and size.
  2. Then the collection pages they appear on, so the grid looks even.
  3. Then the rest of the catalogue, a batch at a time.
  4. Add alt text as you go, rather than as a separate job.

A bulk export of your products to a spreadsheet, through Shopify's product CSV, shows which products have few images or none, so you know where to start.

A Shopify image checklist

  1. One shape for every product, set in your theme too.
  2. 2,048 pixels on the long side; nothing under about 1,000.
  3. JPEG for photos, saved at high quality, not maximum.
  4. Alt text on every image, describing it.
  5. Images assigned to their variants.
  6. A clean main image with no words, for Google Shopping.
  7. Checked on a phone, on mobile data.

Can you use Shopify images on marketplaces too?

Mostly, yes. If you also sell on Amazon, Walmart, Etsy or eBay, make your store images square at about 2,048 pixels, and they will meet the size rules of most marketplaces too. Our table of product image sizes for every marketplace shows the differences, such as eBay's ban on words on any photo.

Questions sellers ask

What is the best image size for Shopify?

A 2,048 by 2,048 pixel square usually displays best, Shopify notes. Shopify accepts images up to 5,000 by 5,000 pixels and 25 megapixels, and files under 20MB.

Do all Shopify product images need to be the same size?

The same shape matters most. Your theme crops or spaces images by shape, so mixed shapes make an uneven collection page; choose one shape, square for most stores, and use it for every product.

Why are my Shopify product images blurry?

Usually because they are too small: below about 1,000 pixels, zoom and high-resolution screens show soft edges. Upload images at 2,048 pixels on the long side.

Can I import images over 20 megapixels into Shopify with a CSV?

No. Shopify's product CSV import refuses images over 20 megapixels.

Can a Shopify main image carry a badge?

Not if your store feeds Google Shopping. Google does not allow promotional overlays or text covering the product on the main image, and disapproves images where overlays cover the product.
