Walmart product image requirements: sizes, the white main image and what gets an image rejected

Walmart's image rules for Marketplace sellers: the 2,200 pixel square, file types and sizes, what the main image must and must not show, what additional images are for, what gets an image removed, and Walmart's rules on AI-generated images.

Walmart wants square product images of 2,200 by 2,200 pixels, in RGB colour, saved as JPEG, PNG or BMP at 5MB or less, with 1,500 pixels a side as the minimum for zoom. The main image shows the product alone on pure white (255, 255, 255), in focus and well lit, with no watermark, logo or accessory that is not in the box, and Walmart recommends at least four images for each listing. No image may carry claims, promotional words, out-of-stock messages, a retailer's name or logo, or text in a language other than English, and an AI-generated image must be "truthful, accurate and not misleading".

Walmart scores images on its listing quality dashboard, and Walmart Canada's guide to it flags a listing with fewer images than the average for the best-selling items in its subcategory, an image too small to zoom, and a product that fills less than half the frame. A set made for another marketplace can also break Walmart's image rules on one detail: an off-white background, a "best seller" badge or a lifestyle main image.

This guide takes each of Walmart's US Marketplace image rules in turn, and ends with a checklist for upload.

What size should Walmart product images be?

Walmart's image guide asks for square images of 2,200 by 2,200 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1, with 1,500 by 1,500 pixels as the minimum for zoom. Below 1,500 pixels, a shopper cannot zoom into the image, and zoom is how buyers on Walmart check stitching, texture and the small print on a label.

Walmart's listing quality guidance in Canada sets its zoom line lower, at 1,000 pixels on at least one side, and recommends a 1:1 ratio for every image. An image made at 2,200 pixels square clears both lines, so make that your one working size.

SpecificationWalmart's figure
Recommended size2,200 x 2,200 pixels
Aspect ratio1:1, square
Minimum for zoom1,500 x 1,500 pixels
File size5MB or less
File typesJPEG, JPG, PNG, BMP; GIF not accepted
ColourRGB

Do not stretch a small photo. Walmart's guide says "Don't resize smaller images to fill space, as this reduces image quality." A 900-pixel photo enlarged to 2,200 pixels is still a 900-pixel photo, only blurrier. Go back to the original file, or shoot again.

Which file types does Walmart accept?

Walmart accepts JPEG, JPG, PNG and BMP, and does not accept GIF. Use JPEG for photographs: at 2,200 pixels square, a high-quality JPEG sits comfortably under the 5MB limit. Use PNG for an image with fine lines and flat colour, such as a line drawing, and check the file size before you upload, because a PNG of a detailed photo can pass 5MB.

Save in RGB. A file exported in CMYK for print shows shifted colours on screen, and a navy jacket that arrives looking black is a return.

What must the Walmart main image show?

The Walmart main image shows the product on a pure white background (255, 255, 255), in focus and professionally lit. It is the image shoppers see in search, so it carries most of the work of getting a click.

Walmart's rules for it:

  • Pure white behind the product. Not cream, not light grey. Our guide to white background product photos shows how to reach a true 255 white without losing the product's edges.
  • Cropped close. "Crop the item as close as possible to the image frame. Avoid excessive background space around the item."
  • No watermark, seller name or logo on the image.
  • No accessories that are not included. Walmart's reason: they "may confuse the customer". If the lamp ships without a bulb, the main image shows it without one.
  • Larger items in a setting. Walmart allows images of larger items to show "the item in an expected environment", such as a sofa in a room.

The accessory rule is easy to break by accident. A phone case shown on a phone, a frame shown with a print in it, a pan shown with food: each shows something the buyer does not receive. Show the case alone, the frame with its paper insert, the pan empty.

What are Walmart's additional images for?

Walmart's additional images show the product and its features, and must match the product named in the title. They are where you show the back, the side, the details, the size, the product in use and what is in the box.

A set of four or more images, the minimum Walmart recommends, that covers what buyers ask:

  1. The main image, on white.
  2. The back or side, so the shape is clear.
  3. A close detail: the fabric, the zip, the control panel, the label.
  4. The product in use, at its real size beside a hand or in a room.
  5. What is in the box, laid out.
  6. Its size, beside an object every buyer knows, with the measurements in your attributes.

Every image in the set must be different. Walmart's guide bars duplicate images. Uploading the main image twice to make up the count does not help a listing, and it breaks the rule.

Can Walmart images have text on them?

Walmart's image guide bars claims, promotional language, Walmart's or any other retailer's name or logo, and any language other than English on its images. Its rich media technical requirements go further: "Don't embed text other than a brand logo into an image." So a Walmart image carries no words of yours beyond your brand's logo, and the main image carries no logo either. Show the removable lid, the size and the washable cover in the image itself, and put the words in your key features.

Walmart's prohibited products policies go further on certain words. Its PFAS policy bars "PFAS-free" and similar claims, its textiles policy treats rayon described as bamboo as falsely labelled, its medical devices policy bars FDA logos and other FDA imagery, and its product claims policy restricts "biodegradable" and "compostable". Those words are as barred on an image as in the title.

What gets a Walmart image removed?

Walmart's guide names these image faults, and each one puts the image, and sometimes the item, at risk:

FaultWalmart's rule
Off-white main backgroundPure white, 255, 255, 255
Watermark, logo or seller name on the main imageNot allowed
Accessories not included with the itemNot allowed on the main image
Claims or promotional languageNot allowed on any image
Walmart's or another retailer's name or logoNot allowed on any image
Out-of-stock or sold-out messagesNot allowed
Duplicate imagesNot allowed
Text in a language other than EnglishNot allowed
A placeholder other than Walmart'sOnly Walmart's designated placeholder
GIF filesNot accepted
An image that does not match the product nameImages must match the item

On placeholders, Walmart's guide is plain: "Do not use any other placeholder images." An item carrying Walmart's placeholder does not go live until a real image replaces it, so treat a placeholder as a reminder, not a listing.

For cosmetics, Walmart's policy also flags "fake or misleading before and after images". A before-and-after pair must show a real result from the real product, or it does not belong in the listing.

What are Walmart's rules on AI-generated images?

Walmart allows AI-generated images, under one condition: the image must be true to the product. Its image guide says images made with artificial intelligence "must be truthful, accurate and not misleading".

Walmart's compliance guidelines for AI-generated content, published on 3 April 2026, set out what that means:

  • "All claims, images, and descriptions must match the actual product including size, color and other features."
  • AI-generated content that "misrepresents a product, makes unsubstantiated or unsafe claims, fabricates reviews or endorsements" is "strictly prohibited".
  • The seller is "responsible for reviewing and substantiating AI-generated content before publication".

Walmart's product details policy adds a rule for all content, AI-made or not: you may use only content you have the rights to, and it must not "infringe any third-party intellectual property or other rights".

In practice, an AI-made kitchen behind your real kettle is fine. An AI-made kettle that is shinier, larger or carries a different label than the one in the box is a misrepresentation, however good it looks. There are two safe ways: place your real product's pixels into a made setting, or draw the scene with your product and check every drawing against your photo. Our guide to AI product photography explains both and the check each needs.

Do Walmart images need to match each variant?

Yes. Each colour or size in a Walmart variant group is a separate item in your setup file, and Walmart asks for a swatch image for each colour, which the sizes of that colour can share. Every image must match the item it sits on. A navy variant showing the black jacket fails the match rule and invites returns. Give every variant a main image in its colour, shot the same way as the others, so the group looks consistent when a shopper switches between them.

Where do video and 360-degree images go?

Videos and Brand Highlights are rich media on Walmart, added through the Media Library in Seller Center rather than the image slots, and a video file can be up to 100MB. Walmart Canada's rich media standards set a 360-degree spin at exactly 24 JPEG frames, each 1MB or less. Our guide to Walmart rich media covers the rest.

A Walmart image checklist

Before you upload, check every image against this list:

  1. Square, 2,200 x 2,200 pixels, and never smaller than 1,500 pixels a side.
  2. JPEG, PNG or BMP, RGB colour, 5MB or less.
  3. Main image on pure white, 255, 255, 255, cropped close.
  4. No watermark, logo or seller name on the main image.
  5. No accessory that is not in the box.
  6. At least four images, none repeated.
  7. No words beyond your brand's logo: no claims, promotional words, out-of-stock messages, retailer names or non-English text.
  8. Every image matches the product, its size and its colour, including any made with AI.

Questions sellers ask

What is the minimum image size for Walmart?

Walmart's image guide sets 1,500 by 1,500 pixels as the minimum for zoom and recommends 2,200 by 2,200 pixels, square. Smaller images can upload, but shoppers cannot zoom into them, and zoom is how buyers inspect detail before they buy.

Does Walmart require a white background?

Yes, for the main image. Walmart asks for pure white, 255, 255, 255, with the product in focus and professionally lit; larger items may be shown in an expected environment, such as furniture in a room. Additional images can show the product in use or in a setting.

How many images should a Walmart listing have?

Walmart recommends at least four images for each listing, and bars duplicates, so each image must show something new.

Can I use AI-generated images on Walmart?

Yes, if they are accurate. Walmart's image guide says AI-generated images "must be truthful, accurate and not misleading", and its AI guidelines say every image must match the actual product, including size and colour. You are responsible for checking AI images before they go live.

Why does Walmart reject my product images?

The usual causes are an off-white main background, a logo or watermark, accessories not included with the item, promotional words or claims, a retailer's name or logo, duplicate images, non-English text, or a GIF file. Check each image against Walmart's list before you upload, and fix the main image first, because it is the one shoppers see in search.

The last word

Size and file type are easy to get right once and forget. The rule that decides whether a Walmart image helps or hurts you is the match: every image, AI-made or not, must show exactly the product the buyer receives. Get that right and the white background, the crop and the image count are details you can fix in an afternoon.
