Walmart product title rules: the 150-character limit, the brand-first formula and what Walmart bars
Walmart's rules for product titles: the 150-character limit and the 50 to 75 characters Walmart suggests for reading, the brand-first order Walmart gives and how it applies to common products, the words and symbols Walmart bars, and what happens to titles that break the rules.

On this page
A Walmart product title can be up to 150 characters, and Walmart's Canadian guidance suggests 50 to 75 characters, built brand first: Brand + Defining Qualities + Item Name + Pack Count, with model, style and size added where they apply. Walmart bars titles in all capitals, special characters such as ~ ! * $, repeated keywords, promotional claims such as "best-selling" or "Black Friday", URLs, other retailers' names and years, unless the content standards for the product type recommend a year.
The title is the one line of copy every Walmart shopper reads, in search, in the cart and on the order confirmation. It is also one of the three places, with the description and key features, where Walmart's keyword guide tells you to use your primary keywords. Getting it right is not about fitting more in; Walmart's rules reward the title that says exactly what the item is, in the order a shopper would say it.
This guide sets out Walmart's limits, the formula and how it applies by category, the words and symbols Walmart bars, and a before-and-after you can copy.
How long can a Walmart product title be?
Walmart's product details policy asks for "brief titles not exceeding 150 characters". That is the limit. Walmart's guide to keyword stuffing in Canada gives a tighter target, product names of 50 to 75 characters, not counting spaces, and treats titles of more than 250 characters as keyword stuffing.
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| 150 characters | The limit in Walmart's product details policy |
| 50 to 75 characters, not counting spaces | The suggested length in Walmart's Canadian guidance |
Write to the shorter target and treat 150 as the ceiling. A title near the shorter target reads at a glance on a phone, and it forces the choice that makes a good title: what matters most about this item.
What is the Walmart title formula?
Walmart's item setup tips give the standard form for a product name as "Brand + Defining Qualities + Item Name + Pack Count, if applicable". Walmart's guide to keyword stuffing asks you to build titles "with the most important information to least important from left to right", and gives this example order: Brand + Item Name + Model Name (if applicable) + Style (if applicable) + Key Attribute + Pack Count (if applicable) + Size (if applicable). Both are on Walmart's Canadian Marketplace Learn pages, and both put the brand first.
Each part, and what goes in it:
- Brand. The brand on the product, written as the brand writes it. One brand only.
- Defining qualities. The one or two facts that separate this item from the next result: the material, the main feature, the power, the scent.
- Item name. What the thing is, in the words a shopper types: "Insulated Water Bottle", not "Hydration Vessel".
- Model and style. The model name or number, and the style, where buyers search for them.
- Pack count and size. Walmart asks for relevant values that describe key attributes, such as "5 in", "4 count" or "12 oz".
How does the Walmart title formula apply by category?
The formula stays brand first in every category; what changes is the content standard Walmart sets for each product type. Its rule on years shows how far those standards reach: a year is barred "unless it is recommended by the Content standards for your item's product type". Walmart Canada publishes style guides for each product type group, including a Product Name and Attribute Style Guide. Check the standard for your product type in Seller Center before you write.
The table below is ours, not Walmart's, and these are not Walmart category templates: they are Walmart's standard form, Brand + Defining Qualities + Item Name + Pack Count, applied to six everyday products, with size and model added where they apply, and "Brand" standing in for the brand name:
| Product | Walmart's parts, applied | Our example title |
|---|---|---|
| Polo shirt | Brand + defining qualities + item name | Brand Short Sleeve Cotton Polo Shirt |
| Headphones | Brand + defining quality + item name + model | Brand Wireless Over-Ear Headphones, X200 |
| Bath towels | Brand + defining quality + item name + size + pack count | Brand Cotton Bath Towels, 27 x 54 in, 4 Count |
| Face cream | Brand + defining quality + item name + size | Brand Unscented Face Cream, 1.7 oz |
| Potato chips | Brand + defining quality + item name + size + pack count | Brand Sea Salt Kettle Potato Chips, 8 oz, 6 Count |
| Building blocks | Brand + defining quality + item name + pack count | Brand Wooden Building Blocks, 100 Count |
These examples show the order, not the length. Each runs 29 to 40 characters not counting spaces before a real brand name replaces "Brand", so add the attributes buyers filter by, such as colour, material, scent or count, until the title reaches the 50 to 75 characters Walmart's Canadian guidance suggests.
Two habits make these work. Write size and pack count as values, "8 oz" or "4 Count", as Walmart's examples do. And keep every defining quality a plain fact about the item in the box: a material, a flavour, a feature, never a promise.
What does Walmart bar in titles?
Walmart's product details policy bars these from titles:
| Barred | Example |
|---|---|
| Writing in all capitals | STAINLESS STEEL WATER BOTTLE |
| Special characters | ~ ! * $ |
| Repeated keywords | "Water Bottle Insulated Water Bottle" |
| More than one brand or product type | "Brand A / Brand B Bottle and Lunch Box" |
| Promotional claims | "best-selling", "Black Friday", "free shipping", "hot sale" |
| URLs | "brand.com" |
| Irrelevant information | "coming soon", "out-of-stock", "discontinued" |
| Walmart's or another retailer's name | unless licensed or part of the brand |
| Years | "2026", unless the product type's content standards recommend one |
| Languages other than English | unless part of the item or brand name |
Walmart's listing quality guidance in Canada says the same about marketing: titles "should not contain any form of marketing claim such as 'best seller', 'free shipping'", and it flags special characters and titles in capitals. Walmart's Canadian product content policy also asks for title case, capitalising most words and leaving articles and prepositions lower case.
How should you use keywords in a Walmart title?
Walmart's advice is to "Select one or two primary keywords to use once in your product title, description and key features." Once is the point. Walmart defines keyword stuffing as "manipulating your product titles and descriptions with excessive or irrelevant words".
Choose the primary keyword as the phrase a shopper would type to find exactly this item, and make it the item name in your title. Put the supporting words, such as materials, colours and uses, in the attributes, where Walmart's filters read them. The guide to Walmart listing optimisation covers attributes and the listing quality score in detail.
What happens to a Walmart title that breaks the rules?
A title that breaks Walmart's rules puts the item at risk. Walmart's product details policy says violations "may result in removal of offers or content, and/or suspension or termination of your Marketplace account". Short of that, a title with capitals, symbols or marketing words loses points on the listing quality dashboard, where content and discoverability is one of the three parts of the score, with offer and ratings and reviews.
Walmart also chooses which content shows when several sellers offer the same item, "giving priority to content provided directly by brand owners and their authorized resellers". If you resell a brand, your title may not be the one shoppers see.
Before and after
A title written for speed, pasted into Walmart:
BEST Insulated Water Bottle!!! Water Bottle Stainless Steel 32oz Leak Proof - FREE SHIPPING 2026
The same item, written to Walmart's rules:
Brand Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle, 32 oz, Leak-Proof Lid, 2 Pack
The new title starts with the brand, names the defining quality and the item once, gives the size and pack count as values, and drops the capitals, the exclamation marks, the repeated "water bottle", the shipping promise and the year. It is 64 characters not counting spaces, inside Walmart's suggested range of 50 to 75.
A Walmart title checklist
- Brand first, one brand only.
- Defining quality, item name, then model, style, size and pack count where they apply.
- Within 150 characters; aim for 50 to 75 not counting spaces.
- Title case, never all capitals.
- No
~ ! * $or other symbols, no URLs. - One or two primary keywords, each used once.
- No promotions, no retailer names, no year unless the product type's standards ask for it.
- Every word true of the item in the box.

Questions sellers ask
What is the character limit for a Walmart product title?
Walmart's product details policy allows titles of up to 150 characters. Walmart's Canadian guidance suggests 50 to 75 characters, not counting spaces, so aim short and treat 150 as the ceiling.
What order should a Walmart title follow?
Walmart's standard form is Brand + Defining Qualities + Item Name + Pack Count, if applicable. Its guide to keyword stuffing gives a fuller example order that adds model, style, a key attribute and size, from most to least important, each only where it applies.
Can I put the year in a Walmart title?
Only if the content standards for your item's product type recommend it. Otherwise Walmart bars years such as 2025 or 2026 in titles.
Are special characters allowed in Walmart titles?
No. Walmart bars special characters such as ~ ! * $ and writing in all capitals. Use commas to separate values such as size and pack count, and write the words out.
Can I mention free shipping or a sale in a Walmart title?
No. Walmart bars promotional claims in titles, including "best-selling", "Black Friday", "free shipping" and "hot sale". Walmart shows shipping and price elsewhere on the page.
The last word
A Walmart title is a description, not an advert. Brand first, then what the item is and the one fact that sets it apart, said once and in plain words, will meet every rule Walmart sets and read well on a phone. Everything you are tempted to add beyond that belongs in the attributes or the key features.
