Etsy views but no sales: a checklist for photos, price and listing words
A checklist for Etsy listings that get views but no sales: read your stats first, then check the thumbnail at phone size, photos that answer size, colour and material, the first lines of the description, price and delivery, and reviews and shop policies.

On this page
When an Etsy listing gets views but no sales, buyers are finding it and leaving, so the cause is usually on the listing itself: a thumbnail that is unclear at phone size, photos that leave size, colour or material unanswered, a description that hides the facts, or a price, delivery cost or shop that makes buyers hesitate. Read your stats first to see where buyers drop off, then change one thing at a time and give each change a week or two.
Views without sales is one of the most common worries on Etsy's community forums, and one of the most frustrating, because it means something is working. Buyers are finding your listing. Etsy's search is showing it. Then they leave. The good news is that the problem is usually on the listing itself, where you can fix it.
This checklist works through the likely causes in the order a buyer meets them: the stats that tell you where buyers drop off, the thumbnail, the photos, the description, the price and delivery, and the trust signals of reviews and policies. It ends with a two-week plan for testing changes one at a time, so you know which change made the difference, and a short list of things not to do while you test.
What do Etsy stats tell you about views without sales?
Etsy stats tell you where buyers drop off, so look at what your shop's stats say about the listing before you change anything:
- Views or visits: how many buyers opened the listing.
- Favourites: how many saved it for later.
- Orders: how many bought.
- Where buyers came from: Etsy search, Etsy ads, social media, other sites.
- The search terms that brought them.
Read them together:
| What the stats show | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Few views | A search problem: title, tags, attributes, category |
| Many views, few favourites | The listing does not appeal once opened: photos, price, description |
| Many favourites, few orders | Buyers like it but hesitate: price, delivery cost, trust, timing |
| Views from search terms that do not fit | The listing is found by the wrong buyers |
The last row is easy to miss. If buyers arrive from searches for something your item is not, they will leave whatever the photos look like. That is a tags and title problem: Etsy's title guidance asks for titles that say clearly what the item is first, so the right buyers find it. Both are covered in our guides to Etsy SEO and Etsy tags.
How do you check an Etsy thumbnail at phone size?
Check your Etsy thumbnail on a phone, in the Etsy app, beside the listings around it, because the decision to tap starts there:
- Is the item whole? Etsy crops the first photo differently in different places; anything near the edges may be cut off.
- Can you tell what it is in a second?
- Does it stand out by being clear, not by being busy?
Our guide to Etsy listing photo size covers framing so the item survives every crop.
Which questions should Etsy photos answer?
Once a buyer opens an Etsy listing, the photos have to answer the questions they would ask in a shop: size, colour, material, use, contents and options. Etsy's community and eRank's guide both point to photos that leave questions open as a common reason for views without sales.
Check that your photos answer:
- How big is it? A photo in a hand, on a person, or beside a familiar object.
- What colour is it really? Daylight, no filters, the colour true to the item.
- What is it made of? A close-up of the texture or material.
- What does it look like in use? On a shelf, worn, on a table.
- What arrives? Every piece, and the packaging if it is a gift.
- Every option. Each colour or size the listing offers.
Etsy asks for original photos of the actual item, not renderings or stock photos, and suggests images about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side. Our guide on how to take product photos at home covers the set-up.
What should the first lines of an Etsy description say?
The first lines of an Etsy description should answer the question the photos raise next, because on a phone a buyer sees them before tapping to read more:
- What it is, plainly.
- The size or dimensions.
- What it is made of.
- How long it takes to make or ship, if it is made to order.
A description that opens with a long story about the shop pushes these facts out of sight. Put the story after the facts. Buyers who care about who made the item will read on; buyers who need to know whether it fits will have their answer straight away.
Conflicting details are another quiet sale-killer. Salsify's 2025 survey of US and UK shoppers reports that 54% had abandoned a purchase because of conflicting product information. Check that the title, the photos, the description and the options all agree: same size, same colour names, same count.
Is price the reason for Etsy views but no sales?
Price is rarely the only reason an Etsy listing has views but no sales, but it is worth checking honestly:
- Search for your item as a buyer would and note the prices of the listings around yours.
- Compare like with like: handmade with handmade, the same size and materials.
- Look at the total: price plus delivery. A low price with high delivery can look worse than a higher price with free delivery.
- If you are priced above similar listings, the photos and description must show why: materials, size, finish, how it is made.
- If you are priced well below them, check that buyers do not read the low price as a sign of low quality. A handmade item priced like a mass-produced one can raise doubts rather than settle them.
Does processing time affect Etsy sales?
Yes. Etsy buyers decide on timing too. A gift needed by Saturday will not be bought from a listing that ships in two weeks. Check that:
- Processing time is accurate, and as short as you can honestly keep it.
- Delivery options are clear, with costs that match what similar listings charge.
- Made-to-order items say so in the first lines of the description.
How does a new Etsy shop with no reviews build trust?
A new Etsy shop with no reviews asks buyers to take a chance. You cannot buy trust, but you can show it:
- A complete shop: a banner, a short "about" section, a profile photo.
- Clear policies on returns, exchanges and delivery.
- Quick answers to messages.
- Honest descriptions, so the first buyers leave good reviews.
- Careful packaging, so the item arrives looking as it did in the photos.
Do you have to disclose AI use on Etsy?
Yes, where AI tools helped make any of your images: Etsy's Creativity Standards ask you to say so in the description. Buyers who feel misled by an image do not come back, and an honest line costs nothing.
How do you walk through an Etsy listing as a buyer?
Walk through your Etsy listing once, slowly, on a phone, ideally while logged out of your shop:
- Search for the item using the words a buyer would type, not your title.
- Find your listing in the results. Note what is beside it.
- Tap it, and swipe through every photo without reading anything. What questions are still open?
- Read the first lines of the description. Do they answer those questions?
- Choose an option, such as a colour or size, and check that the photo and price change as you expect.
- Add it to your basket and go as far as the delivery cost. Is the total what a buyer expects?
- Read your shop's reviews and policies as a stranger would.
Anything that made you hesitate, even for a second, made a buyer hesitate too.
What do buyers' messages say about a listing?
Questions buyers send before they buy are the clearest sign of what a listing is missing. If three buyers have asked whether the necklace comes in a longer length, or whether the print includes a frame, the answer belongs in a photo or in the first lines of the description. Keep a list of the questions you are asked, and fix the listing each time one repeats.
What if the problem is the item, not the listing?
Sometimes the Etsy listing is fine and the item is the issue: too few buyers want it at that price, or many similar items compete for the same buyers. Signs that point that way:
- Similar listings with strong photos and many reviews sit beside yours in search.
- Your favourites are high but orders stay at zero after you have fixed photos, description and delivery.
- The item is seasonal, and the season has not started or has passed.
The answer then is different: a variation buyers ask for, a bundle, a size that fills a gap, or a different item altogether. Read the reviews on similar listings: what buyers praise and complain about tells you what they want.
How do you test changes to an Etsy listing?
Test changes to an Etsy listing one at a time, a week each, because fixing everything at once leaves you guessing what worked:
- Week one: photos. Replace the first photo and add any missing answers: size, material, contents. Change nothing else.
- Week two: words. Rewrite the title and the first lines of the description. Change nothing else.
- Then: price or delivery, if the stats still show favourites without orders.
After each step, compare views, favourites and orders with the weeks before. Keep the changes that moved them.
What should you avoid while fixing an Etsy listing?
Four habits make an Etsy listing with views but no sales worse:
- Do not cut the price first. A lower price will not fix a photo that does not show the size.
- Do not change everything at once. You lose the ability to tell what helped.
- Do not copy a competitor's photos or words. Etsy asks for original photos of your item, and copied claims are theirs to prove.
- Do not add tags for things the item is not. More views from the wrong buyers make the problem worse.
A views-but-no-sales checklist
- Stats read: where buyers drop off, and which searches bring them.
- Search terms match what the item is.
- Thumbnail clear and whole at phone size.
- Photos answer size, colour, material, use, contents and options.
- Description opens with what it is, its size and materials.
- Title, photos, description and options agree.
- Price and delivery compared with similar listings.
- Processing time accurate and clear.
- Shop complete, policies clear.
- AI use disclosed where it applies.
Change one thing at a time and give it a couple of weeks before judging, so you know which change made the difference.
How Commicorn helps
- The photos buyers ask for, from yours: size images from your measurements, What's in the set, detail and lifestyle images, square at 2,000 pixels or more.
- Real photos for Etsy. Images where AI drew your item stay out of your Etsy folder, because Etsy asks for photos of the real item.
- Your light, fixed without AI, so colours stay true, with your original always kept.
- A title, 13 tags and a description written from your facts, with the plain facts first.

Questions sellers ask
Why does my Etsy listing get views but no sales?
Usually because something on the listing makes buyers leave: an unclear thumbnail, photos that leave size, colour or material unanswered, a description that hides the facts, or a price or delivery cost that makes them hesitate.
Should I lower my price if my Etsy listing has no sales?
Not first. A lower price will not fix a photo that does not show the size, so check the photos and description first, then compare price plus delivery with similar listings.
How long should I wait after changing an Etsy listing?
A couple of weeks. Change one thing at a time and compare views, favourites and orders with the weeks before.
What do Etsy favourites without orders mean?
Many favourites and few orders usually mean buyers like the item but hesitate over the price, the delivery cost, trust or timing.
Can a new Etsy shop sell without reviews?
Yes, but it has to show trust in other ways: a complete shop, clear policies, quick answers to messages, honest descriptions and careful packaging.
